Our main camera that we are going to focus on and explore is the .0001 Lux Bullet camera. Here are some Pro and Con views we have on this camera.
Pro's of using a super low lux bullet camera with different lenses:
Can be used for recording meteors in stand alone mode.
- Easily mounts on a telescope eyepiece.
- With the right lens, can zoom in and out.
- Can be made portable with battery packs, and lap top computer. Other portable methods possible.
- Hooks up to a PC and/or a TV set so groups of people can view larger screen with ease.
- Generally compares to a generation 2 night vision device.
- Can be used to record deer, and other wildlife at night.
- One camera, many uses. Most dedicated night vision devices are designed for one use and can not be adapted to a telescope (too heavy for one reason), do not have interchangeable lenses, can not zoom / unzoom, and have a limited Field Of View (FOV).
Con's:
-
So far I have found that sometimes there is a fair amount of video light noise resulting in a less clear image, especially when there is moonlight, or city light pollution. (Even though at times there may be a lot of noise, this does not seem to impact the ability to stack images and produce decent images from a video clip!)
- Best when used with no moonlight (for stars, astronomy), which cuts useful periods down to 2 weeks a month, not counting inclement weather or clouds. Same holds true for all astronomy, so is not a real con for this particular camera.
- Little information regarding good reliable software, and video capture methods and devices. We are working on gathering information here.
- Have not found a good reliable one stop shop to buy all components at a reasonable price, which would save on shipping costs.
